When i changed the starter didnt use any shims but it did work drove around town this moring it was whinning?

does this sound more like a shim issue or a fly wheel this was my first starter i ever changed so did not know about the shims

Does this starter mount from under the flywheel housing or does it slide into the housing? On an undermount starter the shims keep the bendix gear from mashing into the flywheel when starting. But when the starter is not engaged, the bendix retreats inside the housing, so there should be no contact against the flywheel except during starting.

I suppose if its a slide-in mount, the lack of shims could cause the gear to engage the flywheel when not in use.

Please provide year, make, model for better answers.

GM car? try a shim should not have any unusual sounds when starting a flywheel would make noise when cranking over engine
put 1 shim in it , it sounds like the drive isnt kicking all the way back in
