1990 honda civic hatchback, wont start changed starter and it still wont start all of the time.?

When I tried to start it it made a high winding grinding sound, changed the starter and it will start sometimes but it still makes the same sound when it doesnt want to start. If i let it sit while im at work it will start when i go home after 8 hours. but it still makes the same sound sometimes. any suggestions what could be causing this?|||the teeth on the flywheel are probably bad|||Without hearing it I could not say for sure. Does the grinding sound stop after a second or does it take a few seconds like it is winding down?

My first inclination is to say the problem might be your flywheel. That is the part that the gear on the starter engages. It is connected to your engine%26#039;s crankshaft and is what actually turns the engine over to start it. If some of the teeth on that flywheel are worn down, then it will make a loud grinding sound when you try to start it until the bendix gear on the starter catches one of the good teeth on the flywheel and then it will start.
