How do you trouble shoot a bad starter on a 98 corolla. Can an ignition problem be elsewhere?

I have a 98 Corolla and hear a single click when I try to start the car. This may happen once or twice, but then it starts easily. How can i troubleshoot the problem without gooing through the hassle of changing my starter and finding out it was something else?|||probably is the starter. but just to be sure, you can bring it over to a shop, and they can do a test with an AVR machine to see if anything is wrong with the starter, alternator, or the battery without taking it out of the car.

i think its called an AVR machine...anyways, just ask them to see if its working. don%26#039;t go to a dealer though, they%26#039;ll overcharge you.|||Maybe just weak battery, take your battery to auto part store and have them do a load test on it.

Changing a starter on 1991 chevy truck.?

I need to replace the starter on a 1991 chevrolet truck. I could really use some help.|||They can be difficult to remove. Disconnect the positive terminal to the battery. Gm is pretty good about placing the starter underneath and to the front of the truck. Disconnect the 2 wires to the solenoid and starter. Unbolt the starter/solenoid(2 bolts). May take some effort to slide it out, finding the right angle to do so. Re-install in reverse. Be careful not to drop the new starter. Many of the new have permanent magnets that are ceramic, and will break if dropped.|||Need more info on truck...make, model, engine size.|||C.. what do you want to know? How familiar are you with mechanics and tools and so forth?

Ok let%26#039;s start from the top. I will assume that you know a little about working on a engine. Do you know where the starter is located? On a Chevy truck it is usually on the engine passenger side bottom in the rear of the engine block. You will need to get under the truck.

The engine starter has a thing called the solenoid attached to it. If you are changing the starter, it is a good idea to change the solenoid also.

Here are the functions of both the solenoid and the starter. The starter is the motor that cranks your engine over. The starter looks a small motor, cylinder shaped about the size if a juicy juice can. The one end of the starter has a gear on a shaft. The gear moves back and forth on the shaft or in and out depending on how you look at the starter. When you turn on your key, the starter motor energizes (spins) and the gear rotates. However the gear must engage with the engine flywheel. The flywheel is a large gear (basketball size in circumference) that is bolted to the internal parts of you engine. To start the engine, the flywheel must turn.

Back to the starter... so you turn your key on, the starter rotates and to get the starter gear to engage with the flywheel, that is the job of the solenoid. The solenoid %26quot;kicks%26quot; the rotating gear into the flywheel and the engine turns over and should start.

Now on to replacing your starter. Here we go!

The first thing that you must do is to disconnect the battery connections/ cables on your battery. Make sure that they are away from the battery and do not touch the battery poles after you have removed them.

You then need to be able to get under the truck. Jack it up and place jack stands under the frame of the truck. make sure to brace it on the frame and not the body or oil pan. The frame is the large metal beams that run from the front of the truck to the rear. Jack it and block it here.

The starter is held in place with two bolts ( the bolt heads are usually pointing down and easily accessible) and a small bolt located up by the solenoid. The solenoid will have three wires connected to it. One, a large red cable which comes from the battery and two smaller wires. Please note where these small wires hook up. It is important that they go back together the same way that they were taken off.

All three wires need to be removed off of the solenoid and the starter bolts must be removed (two large bolts most likely 9/16 or 16 mm wrench is needed). Be careful as the starter is heavy 20-25 lbs. The top smaller bolt also needs to be removed but all that needs removed is the nut on the bolt shaft. This usually takes a small wrench approximately 3/8 or 10 mm in size. The solenoid is bolted right on to your starter and will come out with the starter.

Most car parts stores will give you a core credit for your used starter so make sure you take it with you along with the old solenoid. This way you can compare the new starter with the older one. Make sure that they are identical.

Once you have the new starter, just place it up in the cavity that the old one was removed from. It is not easy to do as it may be heavy to hold it up there and get the bolts started here is a hint: use a jack to help you install the motor. Make sure that you do not cross thread the bolts. Tighten the bolts up really well. Re connect all of the wires including the heavier wire/cable from the battery. Place the nut onto the top bolt shaft.

Wipe the battery poles and re-place the battery cables onto the battery posts. Remember Red goes to + and black goes to -- .

You should be good to go.

How do wire a starter for a 1950 GMC truck?

I am changing the starter in my 1950 GMC truck from a floor starter to a key. Also changing from a generator to a 1 wire alternator. I have an old wiring diagram that I found online but doesn%26#039;t seem to be correct. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.|||The floor starter for the old classics are something that can be changed out if you update everything to 12v negative ground system and it would be the only way for the 1 wire alt to work also.

I have done this to my 62 Econoline van. I pulled all the old alternator wires off and disconnected them and capped them off. Then the 1 wire Delco Remy alt needed a few spacers to fit up and it works great, single 10ga red wire ran to positive on battery. I recommend a 10ga ground wire from the alt bracket to chassis ground also. 1 Wire alternator are known to burn up from having a bad connection.

The starting thing is more preference for you, but I have seen some install a push button to aid in starting these oldies.|||1. Need to know the model of key starter you are buying. Most of the time they just fit into a wire harness, it would be appropriate to know what model your were getting so you could cross over your wiring.

2. On the alternator, I would do the same thing, match the alternator up with current application and run wires where they have to go.

I have a 91 deville after driving it for a while it won't start until it cools down i changed starter and tune?

dont change the starter. is it throttle body injected of mutiport injected. the multiport engines are prone to a problems with the same exact symptoms where it runs till it gets warm and will not start till it cools down 1) low fuel pressure (fuel pump problem) 2) shorted injector (they are grouped injected meaning that the left side fires together and the right side fires together the resistance should be aproxx 13ohms each if you have an injector the is say 3 ohms then you would be pulling maybe 3/4 more amperage from the computer which will shut down the quad driver killing the engine. 3)ignition module inside of the distributor.

how to diag. get a can of starting fluid or carb cleaner when engine wount start take off airfilter tube spray into intake manifold and try to start if it starts the it is a fuel problem the check fuel pressure multiport (8)injectors should be 30psi or more throttle body should be 12psi or more

if not fuel related take off a plug wire stick a screw driver into wire boot make a 1/4 gap between the engine and screw driver have someone crank over engine if no spark the take distributor cap off and remove the ign module (some modules are not in distributor check book) most part store test modules for free

It is actually a fairly easy job. First remove the negative batterry cable, then working under the vehicle, remove the big wire on the starter. There will be a plastic, or rubber cover you pry up, then use (probably) a 12mm wrench to remove the nut. When you put this nut back on, don%26#039;t overtighten, just snug it up. Then remove the smaller wire. You will have to push in on the retainer clip, then pull it out. Then remove the bolts (2) holding the starter to the flywheel. This should take a 12mm socket and appropriate extension. Installation is reverse of removal.

That is a gear reduction starter, the rarely wear out. The biggest cause of failure is the electrical arc on the solenoid contacts burn out. I replace these on most cars for $60.00. That may be beyond you, but if you can buy the contact arms, remove the three screws holding the end cap on the solenoid. You may figure out how it%26#039;s done (simple really), and save the cost of a new starter!

1990 honda civic hatchback, wont start changed starter and it still wont start all of the time.?

When I tried to start it it made a high winding grinding sound, changed the starter and it will start sometimes but it still makes the same sound when it doesnt want to start. If i let it sit while im at work it will start when i go home after 8 hours. but it still makes the same sound sometimes. any suggestions what could be causing this?|||the teeth on the flywheel are probably bad|||Without hearing it I could not say for sure. Does the grinding sound stop after a second or does it take a few seconds like it is winding down?

My first inclination is to say the problem might be your flywheel. That is the part that the gear on the starter engages. It is connected to your engine%26#039;s crankshaft and is what actually turns the engine over to start it. If some of the teeth on that flywheel are worn down, then it will make a loud grinding sound when you try to start it until the bendix gear on the starter catches one of the good teeth on the flywheel and then it will start.

When I changed starter motor on the car it was held on by 3 bolts and 2 for the wiring, a bit of wiggling it and it came off then the new one was wiggled in place and bolted in again (Haynes Manuals have a spanner system of how hard the job is - this was 2, 1 is things like filling up the windscreen washer tank!)

Good luck with it|||as they make 10 different models and as many as 7 variations of each model its hard to be certain but normaley its dis conect battery two wires on starter three bolts that hold the starter will srew in to the starter through the clutch housing take them out remove starter|||Remove old one and put new one in........see.......easy!

How to change starter in 1962 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 60?

I took the old starter out and bought a re manufactured oem starter. Can i just bolt the new one right up? What have I heard about checking lash with flywheel? Is this necessary and if so how do you do it because you can%26#039;t see where the teeth on the starter meet the flywheel? Thanks!|||Try it first. See how it sounds. May need to shim it.|||Some old cars had to shim the starter so the starter gear lined up w/ the ring gear. Measure from the mounting surface to where the gear is extended to make sure they are the same. If so, install it.If not, shim as necessary.

Help with changing starter?

is there a way to get the starter solenoid off of my ford windstar 1995 if one of the screws are stripped|||I%26#039;m surprised you were actually able to purchase the solenoid separately from the starter. The best way to do this would be to remove the starter/solenoid as one piece, and replace it as one. If you are insistent on separating the two, remove both, and spray liberal amounts of PB blaster or WD-40 around the bolts. Remove the stripped screw with a suitably sized pair of vise-grips. Make sure you disconnect the battery BEFORE you do any of this. Hope this helps.|||cut the head off the bolt|||Replace the starter,it doesn%26#039;t cost that much, why bother with the solenoid? If insisted, use impact driver.

How difficult it is to change starter motor on a Toyota Carina?

I am planning to change the starter motor of a Toyota Carina 1.6, 1996 Petrol.

Any ideas how to do it? what kind of tools I need?|||It should be bolted on the engine with 2 bolts and it will have one or two wires to disconnect.

Remove the cables from the battery

Locate a 3/8 inch socket wrench kit and some open end wrenches that are metric.

If you haven%26#039;t done this before, you should have someone help you or find exactly how to do it on a website.

Which one goes where?|||your battery positive cable goes to the large stud as well as another red 10 gauge wire which comes from your engine harness.

You should have a smaller yellow with red stripe wire that goes to the small stud towards motor

Changing starter on RevTech110, can't find a manual or anything for this Chinese thing. Any special advise

Is the clutch wet or dry. Don%26#039;t see a primary fill point so assume dry? If it is wet, how much oil, weight, etc.|||The revtech is simply a harley vtwin evo clone. Get a 99 softail manual and you should be good to go. Starter bolts thru from the starter side into the inner primary... but you need to get into the primary to remove the starter pinion gear. If this is a custom, sometimes it is difficult to get at those bolts without removing the oil tank (if it%26#039;s horse shoe style). There are some dry clutches out there, but mostly for open belt drives. This is most likely a wet clutch. You fill the pimary from the derby cover (clutch inspection cover) untill it rises slightly above the bottom of the clutch basket ( with bike level). Get that manual...

Is tingling when changing from starter studs to normal studs normal?

had my ear pierced about a month ago and i just changed the starter studs to normal ones.

it feels all tingly and slightly itchy now!

is this normal?

sooo worried cos this hole has closed before. ):

also, is it a good idea to change earstuds again?

cos im thinking of changing to plastic ones but im worried changing two times in a day esp. since its tingly is not a good idea.

thanks in advance! :D|||Usually this means that the holes are still healing. It%26#039;s ok that you changed them, it will just take another two weeks to fully heal. Some crust may still form. It also might be an allergy to nickle which most studs have. If it doesn%26#039;t go away or gets red and painful then I%26#039;d suggest buying nickel-free studs. You can find those anywhere, even Wal-Mart. Don%26#039;t use sterling silver yet because when your ear is not fully healed, it will create a black mark that is permanent around the hole. Hope this helps!|||its fine that it is tingling, its just because you%26#039;ve odvisouly had to fiddle with it a bit more than usual to change it. Dont change it again tho, unless back to the first ones and if you do first clean around the earing in the hole and the earing you are about to put it. Then when you take it out also clean the hole just on its own, but be delicate and don%26#039;t carry on if it hurts. But if you dont change it again the itching should just settle down pretty soon, just try not too touch it in the mean time. Also when you stress about something it makes it seem far worse than it is so just relax :D

Pull out the radiator fan with the housing. You will see the starter on the side of the engine under the intake manifold. There are two bolts that go through the trans into the starter. Use a 14mm wrench or socket. On the back of the starter is a bracket that is held onto the block by a bolt with a 12mm head. Remove the wires from the starter and it will come right out. There are a couple of different starters. HOOK THE BATTERY BACK UP. :)|||What%26#039;s wrong with the car? Why must you sell it?|||Go to the library and see if you can find and borrow a shop manual for this car. If not, go to an auto supply store that sells shop manuals and see if they have one for your car.Buying one from the dealer is a last resort. They are expensive there.

I have changed starters quite often, but usually on straight six engines where it is no big deal. Changing out a starter is no big deal, but getting access is. On V8 cars, for instance the starter is underneath the engine. I don%26#039;t know about the Jetta, but you might have to remove things to get to it. On some cars the engine has to be raised to get to it.

Basically, the starter is bolted into the bell housing which connects the transmission to the engine block. There is a heavy cable which connects to a stud on the starter housing. This provides the electric power to the starter.

But I forgot, the Jetta is probably a front wheel drive, with the engine crosswise and on top of the transmission. I have no idea where the starter is, but basic changeout depends on being able to locate it and get to it.

Unbolt the cable, unscrew the bolts holding the starter to the bell housing and pull it out. It may require a little jimmying as the head of the starter is a worm gear which engages the ring gear on the engine fly wheel.Reverse the order to install the new one.

Oh, and when you buy the new starter it may not come with the worm gear drive. You might have to buy it separately or reuse the one on the old starter unless the gears are too badly buggered up from wear and/or abuse.

Reprogram a 93 lumina after changing starter?

This can be done without a computer hook-up and heres how!

Start the vehicle and put in drive, then set the e-brake( if the e-brake is frozen or inoperative put the front bumper against something that wont move or block the wheels very well ), then let the car run for 5 minutes in drive, shut the engine off for 5 min and repeat,, letting the engine run for 5 more min in drive, shut the engine off and you are done. ... the idle air control motor will have learned its idle map strategy at this point|||Nope. It may need to relearn it%26#039;s values since it was reset but it does that by itself. If it keeps up you have other problems.|||Well you clearly had the battery unhooked. That was a smart move. I still see people who try to change a starter motor without unhooking the battery. They are braver than me

Unfortunately when the battery is unhooked any length of time on your Lumina, the PCM loses it%26#039;s operating strategy and must relearn it.

Unhook the battery again for about 10 minutes. Reconnect and restart it and do not touch the throttle even if it sounds like it is going to die. You may have to make 2 or 3 restarts before the idle stablilizes. Let it idle for about 2 minutes once it establishes a good idle. Then you may proceed to drive it. Resist the temptation to feather the throttle if it feels like it is going to die. Let it die if it feels like it is going to. Restart it again and take off.

Basically what you are doing is letting the Throttle Position sensor get in synch with other sensors and the PCM.|||This car requires an %26quot;idle learn%26quot; procedure. Go to

www.w-body.com and in thier forum the FAQ has the procedure listed for the %26quot;do it yourselfer%26quot;|||no it will automatically reclear its self ,it may take a few times of driving it for this to happen ,but usually it will do it in a few miles of driving,or a few good restarts,if it doesnt have the computer scanned at auto zone and see if any trouble codes come up on it,the do this for free, this way it wont cost you for a diagnoses, those will usually clear up in a few miles of driving though, good luck on it.

Changing starter on 1998 Toyota Corolla?

Does anyone have any tips or helpful hints on changing the starter on a 1998 Corolla? Or maybe an online guide? Anything is immensely appreciated!|||Make sure that you disconnect the battery first of all. This is a fire and safety hazard. Also make sure that the motor has completely cooled down before you start. Now remove the 2 wires from the starter motor one normally just pull of (The small one) The thick wire will probaly need a 12 or 13mm spanner to loosen it. Then loosen the 2 BIG bolts that hold the starter motor to the engine, this will be either a 14 or a 17mm spanner.

There you go easy as jump in the dam.|||yes, unplug the battery first. make note to where the wires go, on some they look alike and can get mixed up.
